The Surgery

Cone biopsy and LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) are procedures used in conjunction to identify abnormal tissue in the cervix. This is done to identify cells potentially exhibiting cancer or dysplasia (precancerous). A cone biopsy is called such because they remove a cone-shaped sample from the cervix for examination. LEEP, on the other hand, uses a heated wire to remove tissue higher in the cervix.

Additional Notes

Recovery/Postoperative risks of this procedure include abnormal bleeding, preterm delivery, and narrowing of the cervix (which can lead to infertility).
