Maximum Allowable Blood Loss Calculator

Estimated blood volume and maximum allowable blood loss from the patient profile — in hemoglobin or hematocrit — plus a Need to transfuse? planner that projects the value as loss climbs and estimates the packed cells to give back.

Knowing how far a patient can bleed before you transfuse is one of the most useful numbers in a case — and one of the first to slip when both your hands are busy.

This calculator runs it from the patient you already entered. You get the estimated blood volume and the maximum allowable blood loss up front, and you can work in whichever you think in: a tap flips the whole screen between hemoglobin and hematocrit.

The Need to transfuse? Slide in the estimated blood loss and watch the projected current value fall toward the floor you set; the moment it crosses, it tells you the packed red cells to bring it back — units for an adult, milliliters per kilogram for a child.

Set the floor to match your patient — restrictive for most, higher for cardiac or cardiovascular disease — and every number moves with it. Tap the patient's blood type to see what they can safely receive, and open the rationale for the formulas (the average-hematocrit Gross method) and the restrictive transfusion triggers behind the call.
