Cysts develop as a result of duct blockage of the exiting Bartholin gland. These cysts can become infected and form an abscess. Normal flora, E.coli, and acute inflammation are most often the cause of this condition, but can also be caused by sexually transmitted diseases (STD). STD's known to cause these cysts are chlamydia and gonorrhea. These cysts are most often found in women over the age of 40. Recommendations are to excise these cysts in older women as they can lead to adenoid cystic carcinoma. Otherwise, the lesion can be marsupialized to facilitate drainage and healing.
